– The Story Behind Its Design –

It started out as a spinning-top figure — except it wouldn't spin at all. Still, the shape had turned out so cute that it seemed a shame to throw away, so we drilled a hole and dropped a ball inside, imagining it being rolled by hand like an old trackball mouse.

We brought a prototype to a daycare center, but the children didn't play with it much. Then one child placed it on a tray, tilted the tray, and let it slide — and that gave us the hint we needed: this wasn't a toy to roll by hand, but one to play with on a slope. From there, we kept refining it through trial and error.

The design started from the concept of "a spirit born from wood." It first took the form of a small figure wearing a triangular hat, and Donguri Korokoro's first generation came from simplifying that down to its essentials — removing the arms and legs and compressing the height into a tight, rounded form. The line beneath the eyes wasn't a mouth but the boundary between clothing and face, and the circle in the center wasn't a nose but a button on its clothes. After two more redesigns, that button became a nose, eventually arriving at the form you see today.

This simple facial design — aiming for "a presence that doesn't get in the way of a child's imagination, yet always makes you want it nearby" — is easy to remember and nurtures children's creative play.

From its development to today, it's a product shaped again and again by the ideas of children and customers alike, and we feel deeply grateful for that journey.
