Our Philosophy

"For the better smiles of children." This page introduces the management philosophy Comomg holds dear, our 2030 Vision, and our manufacturing philosophy, "Our commitment to craftsmanship."

Comomg's Philosophy

For the better smiles of children

  • With wooden toys at the core of what we offer, we convey and nurture the importance of independence, imagination, and connection, creating formative experiences of wonder.
  • We continue to create one-of-a-kind products, leading the industry in raising and creating standards of value, and give back to our community and society.
  • We regard all our employees, customers, and business partners as fans of our company, build relationships in which we can all be happy together, and pass on a richer society to the children who will shape the future.

In 2017, we changed our philosophy from "For better play for children" to the current "For the better smiles of children." We wanted it to express a breadth that the word "play" alone could not capture.

The smiles we mean are not only the smile a child gives the moment they pick up a toy. As children discover their own ways to play and become absorbed in it, they develop three strengths: independence, imagination, and connection. Children who can think and act for themselves, who can turn what they imagine into reality, and who care about others' feelings and connect with people naturally draw others to them, and their moments of happiness multiply. The smiles that come as a result are the "better smiles" Comomg aims for.

For those smiles, Comomg values two things. The first is to keep pursuing original craftsmanship found nowhere else, raising the industry's standards of value while giving the results back to our community and society. The second is to regard our employees, our customers, and everyone who helps spread the word about our toys as fans of Comomg, and to build relationships in which we can all be happy together. In this way, we hope to pass on a richer society to the children who will shape the future.

Three Strengths: Independence, Imagination, and Connection

Comomg believes that as children become absorbed in playing with wooden toys, three strengths grow within them.

Independence: the ability to think, decide, and act for oneself.

In play, children take the lead themselves: "I want to try it this way." Building up these moments nurtures the ability to think and decide for oneself. Even as adults, when we weigh different opinions and situations to make a decision, it is essential first to have a clear sense of our own center.

Imagination: the ability to envision, and the ability to give that vision form.

"If I stack it like this, maybe I can build it even higher." Picturing what comes next, then actually trying it and giving it form — this is the foundation of imagination. Not everything in the world has a fixed answer. To use a math analogy, it is the ability, when given a problem, to freely work out the equation and the answer on your own.

Connection: the ability to relate to others.

Playing with siblings or friends brings challenges that solo play does not, yet it also lets play grow far bigger. The joy of accomplishing something you could not do alone, and the kindness of caring for others — these realizations are the entrance to connection. Over time, this extends to nature, history, and culture, growing into the ability to value one's connections with many things.

To nurture these three strengths, Comomg values toys that have a single, simple and clear Pillar of Play. The idea of the Pillar of Play and actual ways to play are introduced on our "Play That Grows" page.
